Since the beta launched, the most common question from outside the coaching staff has been some version of: "Can I use this too?" A parent wants to track their kid's goals and assists. A grandparent wants to see how many games their grandchild has played this season. A sibling wants to know if their brother is on a point streak.

Rinkside v1.1 is the answer to that question. Available now on TestFlight, this release introduces Fan Mode — a completely separate view within the app designed from the ground up for the people in the stands, not on the bench.

"The coaching side of Rinkside was always the core of what I was building. But I kept getting the same message from parents: 'How do I use this?' Fan Mode is for them. It's the same love for the game, just from a different angle — tracking a kid's season the way a parent actually wants to track it."
— Ryland Dean, Creator of Rinkside

Fan Mode is completely independent from the coaching experience. Coaches keep everything they had — roster management, line builder, game day command center, AI coaching insights. Fans get their own clean, focused view. The two modes coexist in a single app, so a coach who's also a hockey parent can use both.

Fan Mode, Explained

👪

A Dedicated View for Fans & Families

Fan Mode is a separate section of Rinkside built for anyone who wants to follow a player without needing access to coaching tools. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings — anyone who cares about a player on the ice but has no business touching a line card. The experience is intentionally simplified: add the players you want to follow, track their stats each game, and watch the season take shape. Fan Mode ships with its own onboarding flow that walks new users through setup in a few taps.

📊

Season Stats — Skaters & Goalies

Fan Mode tracks the numbers that matter to every hockey family. Log stats after each game and watch them accumulate through the season. The stat sheet is split by position so nothing feels out of place:

Skaters
  • Games Played
  • Goals
  • Assists
  • Penalty Minutes
Goalies
  • Wins / Losses / Ties
  • Goals Against
  • Goals Against Average
🏆

Career Stats — Across Multiple Seasons

Once a player has two or more seasons logged in Fan Mode, their career totals surface automatically in the player list. Goals, assists, games played — all of it accumulates across seasons into a running career line. For parents who've been tracking their kid through bantam, midget, or rep hockey, this is the kind of view that starts to tell a real story about a player's development over time.

🔢

Jersey Numbers Per Season

Jersey numbers change. A player might wear #14 one season and #7 the next — whether by choice, a new team, or a coach's roster decision. Fan Mode stores jersey numbers on a per-season basis, so the history stays accurate and you're never looking at last year's number for this year's player. Each season gets its own entry, and the correct number is always shown in context.

📷

Player Photos with Crop Step

Fan Mode supports player photos with a built-in crop step in the photo picker. Pick any photo from your library, frame the shot the way you want it, and save a clean, well-composed profile image for that player. No more stretched thumbnails or awkwardly framed team photos — the crop tool makes sure every profile picture looks intentional.

Everything Else in v1.1

Beyond Fan Mode, this release includes a handful of quality-of-life improvements that make the day-to-day experience tighter across the whole app.

Edit Player Sheet — Fan Mode now includes a full Edit Player sheet, so you can update a player's name, position, jersey number, or photo at any point in the season without removing and re-adding them.

Swipe to Delete — Players in the Fan Mode list can now be removed with a standard swipe-to-delete gesture, consistent with the rest of the iOS experience and what coaches already have in the roster view.

Who Is Fan Mode For?

Fan Mode is designed for anyone who's spent a season watching a player from the stands and wanted a better way to track it. Hockey parents who want to follow their child's goals and assists game by game. Grandparents who travel to games and want a running total to brag about at the dinner table. Siblings who keep score in their heads and now have somewhere to put it. Aunts and uncles who show up to every home game and want to feel more connected to the season.

It's not a coaching tool. It doesn't need to be. Fan Mode is for the people who care most about a player and wanted Rinkside to have a place for them too.
